How Much Oil Does America Import From Russia?

And what does a ban mean for Americans

This morning, President Joe Biden announced a ban on the import of oil and other energy products from Russia, in response to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Most Americans probably hardly thought about where their oil comes from as of a few weeks ago. Now it’s a burning question on many peoples’ minds: how much oil does the USA actually import from Russia?

For an answer, let’s look at an industry source that does research on this subject. The American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) is an industry trade group representing American oil companies, among others. The group can be politically controversial, but they’ve been around since 1902, and gather a ton of industry data on the state of oil in America.

According to the AFPM’s data, in 2021 America imported an average of 209,000 barrels of oil from Russia each day.
