Food is one of the best things about the San Francisco Bay Area.

When people ask why I moved here in 2013, I give my stock responses about work, the importance of being near Silicon Valley for a tech-driven company, etc. Those are true, but really, the Bay Area’s food scene was just as significant a factor in my move.

The food here is incredible and varied, with some of the highest-end, Michelin starred restaurants in the world, as well as innovative New American cuisine (launched in the 1970s in Berkeley) and international specialties from every conceivable country and culture.

With COVID-19, though, all that is in jeopardy.

The San Francisco Chronicle keeps a running list of Bay Area restaurants that have closed permanently as a result of COVID-19. I find this list tragic. It’s a daily reminder of how our food scene is eroding, one place at a time.

But not all is lost. Many Bay Area restaurants have remained open, offering takeout, delivery and even donated meals as they help their communities navigate the crisis and Covid-19 lockdowns.
