One overlooked topic here is the way that other gatekeepers treat AI content. Many Medium writers get a lot of traffic from sources like Google. Medium has a strong domain authority score, which can elevate the SEO of even new writers on the platform.

However, Google has explicitly banned AI content, considering it spam. If writers fill Medium up with AI content, that sends bad signals to Google's AI detection systems about the overall Medium site.

They might start to downgrade Medium results in search, which hurts non-AI writers on the platform by reducing their search traffic.

Ideally, this would be a two-way conversation between Google and Medium (and other stakeholders) about what passes the test of quality in both contexts/platforms.
