Tri-x is not 400 speed only. It’s offered in 320 asa as 4x5 and up even today, and was originally 200 speed in the 1940s.

RE its use in photojournalism, I’m talking much earlier, Steve. I’ve personally preserved tens of thousands of news photos shot on Tri-x between the 1940s and 1970s.

I use Tri-x 400 in my own work today and find it both easy and forgiving.
